Abbey and Gaiety Theatres: booking issues

Just wanted to share my experience today, in the hope that it doesnt happen to anyone else!

So, I had booked for my brother and his wife to visit Dublin for a show tonight. I booked tickets for Playboy of the Western World in the Abbey.

Around 4pm, I got a call to say I had missed the 2pm show. I explained I had booked for the 7.30pm show, and didnt even realise there was one at 2pm. I was more or less told that I should have read through my confirmation, which at a further glance did say 2pm, something I missed.

So anyway, in my haste to book another show, I called the Gaiety at 4.30pm, and managed to get 2 seats for Cinderella instead. I told the man on the phone that my brother would be attending the show, not me.

He then went on to explain that all I had to do was email their box office, and let the staff know the name of the person collecting the tickets. So I emailed them.

Next thing I know, at 7.30pm, I get a call of my brother saying that they wouldnt let him pick up the tickets! I spoke to the lady at the box office, and they said there don't have email - or internet - facilities. I told her that the man I had spoken to told me to email, which I did. She said they needed the cardholder to sign for the tickets, something I wasn't told on the phone. They also said they have a no-refund policy, but after stating the facts, eventually I got a refund in the end.

So, beware everyone! Don't book tickets for someone else, as they can't pick them up!

As a final word, anyone know if or how I could get a refund from the Abbey? The 7.30pm show was sold out, so couldnt transfer or change the tickets. Have I just lost the money?

Re: Gaiety Theatre

I find it very strange that the Abbey rang to let you know you'd missed the show. I don't think this is normal practice. Do you think they realised there was a problem and were trying to cover themselves?

Re: Gaiety Theatre

That struck me as very odd as well. Were they trying to sell you tickets for some other show?

I suspect that a lot of people didn't show up because of some confusion over booking.

I booked a show in O2 through Ticketmaster by their automated phone system. When the tickets arrived around 2 months after the booking, it said I had booked the afternoon show.

They said I could not change my order. I said I was not trying to change it and that they had made a mistake.

I asked customer service to escalate it to save them and me the hassle of the Small Claims Court. The manager got back to me and exchanged the tickets but still insisted that I had confirmed the afternoon show three times. I really doubt it.

Re: Gaiety Theatre

The Abbey Theatre changed their computer booking system in November, I wonder if they're still ironing out the kinks, which might explain the phone call (and the incorrect time on the tickets)?

I bought tickets for a Sat matinee show in November and their system wouldn't accept a VISA Debit card, although I'd used it there before they upgraded.

At the show itself, there appeared to be some confusion in a row ahead of me - people turned up with tickets for seats already occupied. Turned out the occupants' tickets were dated for the following Saturday, which wasn't what they'd asked for at the time.

Re: Gaiety Theatre

It really confused me, as I have booked so much stuff on the internet, I really didn't think I was stupid enough to book the wrong times.

I have no idea why the woman rang. I mean, the show started at 2pm, and she called me just around 4pm. It seems odd.

They weren't trying to sell me any more tickets, they were just saying that I had booked the wrong ones and in effect missed the show, which wasn't the one I wanted in the first place!

I've booked flights, package holidays, music tickets and many more over the net. I'm gutted that my brother and sister in law had to miss their show, I'm really disappointed by this. Anyone think it would be worth writing to both the Abbey over the original problem, and the Gaiety for the second?

Re: Gaiety Theatre

I think your problem with the Abbey is that they did send you tickets with the "wrong" time on them. That was the time to raise a complaint. You could always write to them now, but I don't think that they have a case. I would check with them why they rang. It sounds as if lots of people didn't show up for the same reason as you didn't, and they did not want a big scene when lots of people turned up having made the same mistake as this would suggest that it was the Abbey's fault.

The Gaiety did give you a refund? So I would write to them just telling them to train their staff better.

Brendan. It was ticket pick up at the theatre on the night, not tickets sent by post. You go to the box office, state your name, and get your tickets.

I was more or less told that I should have read through my confirmation, which at a further glance did say 2pm, something I missed.

Did you get the confirmation by email with the 2pm time? If so, then you have no case.

Brendan

Brendan, I assumed the same. The confirmation was sent to my email, I printed it and gave it to my brother, I didn't read it at all.

My fault entirely for not checking, but I cant figure out why it didn't say 2pm when I booked. There was no 2pm time available, just the 7.30pm.
