Whilst I'm sorry for anyone losing their jobs, by all accounts it was regarded as a 'cushy number' and pretty well paid it seems - other economic factors aside it sounds like there was room for greater efficiencies and pay cuts. But maybe things had just gone too far - I don't know about the recent history/practices in the place.
