A solicitor's fees and cancellations

Hi all,
Just looking for some advice.
My wife and I had an offer on a house accepted last weekend. Our estate agent sent us two solicitors details with quotes for conveyancing.
The long and short of it is, there was some confusion, which saw two conveyancing packs turn up on our doorstep on tuesday this week. Of course, somehow we had managed to agree verbally to both.
On realising the mistake I contacted one of them immediately the next day to apologise for the confusion and say we would not be going with them.
They said that was unfortunate and the call ended.

Yesterday we received a letter from the cancelled solicitor informing us that the quote had been in the £500 region, but due to circumstances, would only charge £57.

Id like to know if they can do this, as i hadnt signed anything with said solicitors and there was no mention of fees when i called, cancelled and apologised. They also didnt address the letter properly, with mine and my wifes surname being incorrect.
Do we have any grounds to refuse to pay this charge in respect of not signing anything and not being told about the fee while on the phone?
Any help is appreciated greatly.

Re: A solicitors fee's and cancellations

Is that in the UK? It would be almost unheard of for an EA here in Ireland to organise conveyancing for a client except on a very informal basis and even then it would be for the client to discuss fees. Perhaps its different in the UK

Hi Mf1 - yes it is in the UK.

I should have also said that, the EA recommended one solicitor and provided the other as a comparison.

Each solicitor then contacted directly.

£500 for conveyancing in the UK.........

I often hear of fees of 1500 euro plus outlays.

I paid 900 + VAT + oulays = 1325 euro during 2005.

Our prices have further to fall.

Protocol,

The conveyancing system in the UK is totally different from the system in this country. There is absolutely no comparison between the two.

If you want UK conveyancing fees, lobby the Irish govt to invest in an up to date sytem for Ireland. You'll be waiting for a while.

Kate.

Depending on the complexity of the paperwork (Land Reg vs Registry of Deeds, etc), I'd say somewhere between 1500 to 2500.

Best to look around and get a few quotes. And also see of anyone you know can recommend someone. I'd rather pay a higher fee for better service.
