I was with NTL for about 6 months up until last feb. I cancelled the account through their offcies and my bank as i was moving home. i was looking through former statements and realised that they withdrew 92€ from my account in june last. which is strange, as my monthly fee was 19.99. after 29 emails and and loads of phone credit they still havent returned my money.

just letting ye know in case former ntl customers have had money withdrawn from their accounts also. if it can happen to me it can ahppen to anyone else.

ps-when i cancelled i didnt owe them anything.
 
This is theft, why do companies think they can get away with this? They'll probably blame a systems error. Have you contacted Comreg? You should also consider the small claims court if you have proof.

What about Data Protection - I thought companies weren't supposed to keep your details once they had no valid reason for holding the info and if you ceased being their customerand was fully paid up then they should have had no valid reason.
 
nope wasnt-a twelve month contract. i did contact the gov consumer agency and they rang within two days which was excellent. i told them id try deal with it myself a bit further. might be time to get in touch with them again.

Even if ive to walk into their offices ill be getting my money back-i have the proof in form of a bank staement showing the transaction.

Thanks for advice, but the original post is to advise former ntl customers that this has happened in case they want to check their accounts.

I think webtax was correct in asking about the 12 mth contract - here's a paragraph from the terms and conditions on ntl's website (www.upc.ie)

3.1 The minimum period of service for any Package is twelve (12) months starting on the date we activate the Services. You can only terminate this Agreement during that minimum period if Conditions 19.5 or 20.1 apply otherwise we may (subject to Condition 20.2) charge you a cancellation charge which will be the charges which would have been payable to the end of the minimum period. If you want to terminate this Agreement after the minimum period just give us one month’s notice in writing.
 
I cancelled after trying to get them to fix my line for nearly three months. They said that they would suspend the account from the date the fault was logged but they continued to send me bills and threatened legal action after I had cancelled.
I wrote a stinker of a letter back saying that due to their incompetence I didn’t expect them to actually correct the matter but could they at least stop sending me bills, as I would not be opening them. Then, to my amazement a few weeks ago they sent me a statement showing a credit balance of €17! I never thought I’d see that.
 
This is a chronic problem with telecoms companies here. I would have thought that most people would be aware of this by now.

After spending 4 months a few years ago of wasted calls, emails & letters I make it a point not to set up direct debits with any of them. Just use online banking & pay the bills online when you get them.
 
Yep, Same experience here...

recieved a letter saying I'd be getting cut off in February,... eventually they cut me off in June... then they sent a legal letter saying I owed them up until December... I rang them, they agreed I should only pay until June, I said 'No way, you were supposed to cut us off in February, not my problem you didn't do it, I will only pay till February',.... I have to check what happened in the end, it was a family members account....

The point I take from all this is that some companies will send bills and legal letters to people who don't owe them money, then reduce the bills upon reciept of complaints and say 'sorry, systems error'... how many people just pay the bills and don't complain?

This is why we need an effective regulator who will fine such companies for this type of activity, not the useless regulators we have who take no action... I am talking about Comreg here and the financial ombudsman...
 
Exactly they chance their arm upon getting free money from those 'rich' Irish people who pay withoutchecking. It's rediculous! You can't trust anyone! Even if you're protected by certain laws they always find a way.

Now try and get that €17 back off them. Then I cancelled for consistent no shows, I got a statement with about €5 credit. It should have been more as they had the cancel/disconnect date 2 or 3 days after they had actually disconnected the cable. That was about 3 years ago, I am still waiting for my cheque in the post!

wow. after threatening legal action and tonnes of emails and phone credit.......guess what arrived in the post....A CHEQUE ! wow...
