A good hearth ...

Hey guys,
I want to put a piece of stone down as a hearth for an open fireplace ...
Is it recommended to do this in 2 pieces or will 1 big piece do ?
I need something about 57" x 15"
I have seen beautiful slate like stone down in Liscannor and Doolin ..
Does anyone know where I might get this natural stuff closer to Dublin ?

Seriously though some years ago we wanted natural slate and were directed by a builder to a place down beside The Point.We got what we wanted and they may be worth a visit-cant remember the name
