i'm looking for a 4 star hotel in rome for 3 nights in september. i intend escaping the madnees for the ryder cup for that weekend, any thoughts ???

Can't make any personal reccomendations to you but you could try for reviews and pictures etc. I always check hotels out on it before I stay anywhere.

Crown Plaza, St Peters is quite good - mind you, its a 10-15 minute bus / taxi ride into the centre of the city, but offset by decent size rooms, own grounds, nice pool etc.

Stayed in the residenza antica about 4 years ago.
Great location near trevi fountain & spanish steps.
Small hotel - no lobby just a hall but room was fine etc.
It won't blow you away but you won't go wrong with it.
Found it good value at the time.
Sister-in-law went recently and was similarly impressed.
Bring your walking shoes and have a great time.
I'm looking forward to the ryder cup madness myself.
