Is the registration fee for college just paid for the first year?
I thought it was but one of my colleagues reckons it is to be paid every year but surely that would be just fees by another name.

Student contribution

Most colleges charge an annual student contribution, formerly called the student services charge. It is also known as a registration fee and it covers student services and examinations. The amount of the contribution varies from one institution to another. The maximum rate of the student contribution for the year 2011/2012 is €2,000.

Fees by another name is exactly what it is. Yes, its paid every year.

Didn't know that. When I was in college in the early 90s, the fees were a couple of grand anyway so it sounds like this "free fees" thing is a scam.
My eldest is only in senior infants but I better start saving now!

Whatever its called, it is yet another barrier to people from lower economic demographics accessing the professions, technical work and higher business administration posts.

Only the CDVEC operated a fee waiver for non-scholarship pupils when I was studying.

I think it will mean an increase for those already paying the "registration " fee, themselves and those who cant afford it,ie those already on grants will not have to pay.
