318i Emissions Warning Light

Hi,

The warning light has been coming on in my car for the past few days at startup for a few minutes. The manual is pretty sparse on detail - Engine, fuel emmissions..contact BMW dealer etc.

Has anyone had this / any advice...don't want to bring it in and be charged a plasma-screen tv to have it looked at unless I'm sure it's a problem!

If it is an E46 318i then there are some known issues around the engine coils - problems which would have the following symptoms:

1. Yellow Engine management light comes on (icon depicting an engine)
2. Serious lack of power when accelerating and some shuddering.

This is due to the fact that BMW were apparently contractually obligated to fit an inferior brand of coils to new cars - go to your dealer and tell them you think it is the coil(s) that are gone and ask them to replace with BOSCH coils.
