Hi, am pondering a 2nd hand golf: ‘99, 1.8 petrol, 80+k on clock. Only want a run around but like the look of this car but am in two minds with increased VRT bands due in June. What would you pay? Would 4k be roughly accurate? DS

I sold a 99 1.4 last year (August?) with the same mileage for about 5k. Do get it checked by a mechanic, and ask about the electrics and the oil usage. We had issues with both, and they are common problems with that year.

Also with 99 models, get the cyclinder heads checked.
Had that expensive problem myself.
But had bought it off a dealer and it was just under warranty - cost 1500.
I was told by the dealer it was big problem with golfs of that era - 98, 99, 00.
great car to drive so solid on the road.

I think €4000 for a 1999 1.8 Golf, 80K sounds a bit on the cheap side.

It would be about right for a 1.4 maybe.

Golf's are no different to any used car. On a 9 year old car overall condition and service history are arguably as important as the brand name.
