I know it's only October and you'll notice I didn't say Christmas in the title as I know some people think it's way too early, but I'm looking for alternative ways to spend Christmas Day, in an ideal world I'd go off to the sun however for lots of reasons that may not happen. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the subject, most people are quite happy to do the traditional stuff but I just fancy something different.

Get yourself over to England, find a pub and a club open on the day and party!

Spend the day working for charity who provide food and comfort for those who need it.

I'd go somewhere suitably exotic, start the day horseriding on a long trek, followed by a long stint in a jacuzzi with a glass of champagne, lunch then the afternoon by a beach, maybe with some water sports at some stage.

Er, at least that's what SOME  people might say- me? I say huskerdu is right...

Tell everyone you're going away but then just don't - stock up on all the essentials, don't answer the door or phone and then just veg, eat, drink and make love with your nearest & dearest for days on end. Don't even wash or get dressed.

" Don't even wash" I think Shop Girl was looking for something different from the usual activity !!

Thats what I do. I thought it was normal!!

It's a good question though. Hard to anything out of the ordinary in Ireland for Xmas as everything closes. Remember living in Sydney and thinking it was great doing things out of the ordinary. That lasted one Xmas. The next one, I was on a flight home for the cold weather, dry turkey, family fights and drunken nights out. Have never deviated since!

You could do a George Michael-Last Christmas-hire a ski chalet with loads of friends. We always said we were going to do that before we had our children but now they're old enough we're starting to think about it again.

Sounds like fun but if you are going to try watersports with that make sure it's in private and with open minded consenting adults.;)

Thought about the charity thing however can't find anything to do! Am involved with volunteering already but they don't have anything happening at Xmas. Only thing I know about is serving dinners in RDS and they are usually oversubscribed.

Have you tried SIMON ? There was an item about them on Morning Ireland this morning and they mentioned proving a service, to those who need it, 365 days a year.
