2012 cars

I expect i'ts been asked before but couldn't find in a search;What's to stop a dealer who has an unsold 2011 model sitting in the showroom since january'11 selling it as a 2012 model in jan'12? Assuming of course that there hasn't been any facelift during the year
Just another quick one, during a search on carzone for Hyundai ix35, I see a 2012 model for sale in Kerry with 20k miles on!! How does that work?

On the continent, car model year starts around September timeframe. I think manufacturers release models at that time as it coincides with Frankfurt and Paris motor shows. So one could by a 2012 model in say November 2011.
In Ireland, year of a car is simply based on date of first registration. So it is not possible to buy a 2012 second hand car yet.
