Hi All
just wondering would anyone be able to help me on a few car issues ?
My car keeps cutting out when i stop at lights, is this because my battery needs to be replaced and i do have to top up the oil once a month ,is my head gasket going ?theres no sign of burning oil but it has not been servced in over a year (due to cash flow probs ).Any tips would gratefull

I had a similar issue with my car.I replaced plug leads /plugs/got new fuel filter/air filter/no signs of gasket going (Mayonnaise type goo on oil filler cap etc).

After spending a couple of hundred euro I still had the problem.
I googled it and found a post saying to check the Accordion type hose from the air box.
On first inspection it looked OK --Then I took it off and when I held it up to the light it was cracked underneath letting air in.
This was sending a false reading to the sensor and effecting everything from idling speed to the car cutting out --especially at low speeds like turning at a junction when the power steering was looking for more revs.
Try this and if it isn't the problem post again and I will ask my friend who is a very experienced mechanic and get a few suggestions for you as he works on a lot of highly tuned cars..
Hopefully we can get this sorted :)

Lads its never a good idea to start changing parts willy nilly in the hope it will cure a problem. Better to take it to a mechanic and get a proper diagnosis. Probably end up cheaper in the long run too.

Nobody is suggesting replacing parts 'willy nilly'. It's an educated guess based on the symptoms. Many garages will do the same, especially if it's a sensor. There are a number of excellent internet forums (fora?) which attract enthusiastic owners. The Golf GTi is a car which probably has more than it's fair share of these.

Martin68 seems like the kind of poster on those sites. It's 100% guaranteed that you are not the first GTi owner that's had such a problem so ask and you shall receive, as it were.

Personally, I have used forums (fora?) to successfully fix many issues on multiple cars, all at a saving of thousands of euro in labour costs and unnecessary replacement parts (utilising simple repairs).

To the OP, I have no idea about GTi's in particular, but a split vacuum hose or Idle Control Valve are common issues that can cause this. On GTi's though, the throttle bodies do get sreriously clogged up with carbon deposts which could mess up the Throttle Position Sensor.

Check out a good GTi Forum and stick up a post.

Good Luck anyway.

First port of call would be getting a diagnostic scan done. You don't have to go to a main dealer for this, there are a fair few enthusiasts who have vag-com (vcds) which does the same job.

Any idea when the plugs have been changed last? There are long life plugs fitted to these and need to be changed every 60k kms iirc.

As for not servicing these, you are on shakey ground by not servicing. The 1.8t engine is prone to sludge build up which can clog the oil pickup pipe in the sump. This can lead to engine failure. Oil should be changed every 10k kms with fully synthetic oil and genuine filters.

There are a few common problems with these engines, coolant temp sensor, diverter valve, split vacuum pipes, coil packs (doubt thats your problem).

As I said, a diag scan is the way to go first :)

I was told by a mechanic to change all these--My regular mechanic was on holidays at the time.
It was through the Internet that I found the problem.
I know from experience that a lot of mechanics will use the trial and error method and try to eliminate the problem this way at the car owners expense.
I posted what I found was causing the problem so that the OP could try an option that wouldn't cost anything and if it were the problem it's an easy DIY cheap fix.
I also said in my post that If this didn't work I would ask my "regular" mechanic if he had any suggestions as he works a lot on these type of cars.

Hi all

think i opened a can of worms there ,anyway thanks for the advice ,i changed the the sparks last month ,then i lost one coil lead last week that needed replacing ,also got the scan done and it looks like an oxygen sensor could be the fault ,just waiting for management light to come up again to do another scan to make sure it is the sensor ,think they cost 150 yos yos .fairly dear sensor for such a small size ,does anyone know somewhere i could get this cheaper
