2001 CLK200 (W208) 80K. Car has been running fine. Car ran fine all day. On last run of the day, ESP and BAS malfunction light comes during journey, accompanied by strange buzzer/warning sound I have never heard before, the sound itself sounded like an intermittent buzzer. This was followed by the ABS Malfunction light and then the Battery/Alternator Malfunction light Vist Workshop. Began to lose power to the engine and revs increased with no power output. Pulled off into a car park, shut off car. Tried to start car, wouldn't turn over. Battery appears good, all lights, windows and radio etc work. Had car jumped which started car but battery not holding charge. Towed to storage until I call tomorrow. Any ideas what might be wrong?

An alternator is part of the charging system of your car that produces electricity for many its devices. A type of generator, the alternator transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy. Although your car's battery supplies some electricity, most of the electrical mechanisms within the vehicle, require the alternator's steady stream of power.

Those symptoms almost certainly indicate the alternator.
Check around for your price. There are some specialist workshops who are a lot cheaper than main dealers and who are top class at fitting alternators cos they do it all the time. And they give you the same guarantee.

Many thanks John, I think you could be right, any idea of a ball park price to have an alternator replaced? and would you know of any specialist workshops off the top of your head, thanks again

Got one done some time back by a specialist workshop in North Finglas called ABC Fitters or something close to that. Done on the button. Left in in the morning and ready at 5. Cost was somewhere around E600.....for a largish Volvo. That ABC crowd can be reached by going up Jamestown Road (opp Superquinn) to the very top (about 1 mile)....at roundabout go straight thro and it's the first or second unit on the right along the main road and 100 yards past the roundabout.

Cheers John i'll give them a shout tomorrow and as you said i'll ring around for the best price, good to know that it can be done on the button and won't have to be left in for a couple of days, many thanks for the advice.
