Hi,

Rookie questions here but what's the story when selling a second hand car privately re:

1) Payment - Is a draft made out to my name or cash? (I assume I don't take a cheque as I won't know the buyer and approx €6k cash also seems iffy)

2) Paperwork - Do I just sign over the Registration document or do I have to send something somewhere (i.e. I don't want any points from someone else)

3) Comeback - While I'm selling in good faith, is it history from my point of view once the deal is done or am I liable for anything?

On item (1) I would check with the bank, I believe forged drafts are becoming an issue.

To answer your points:

1/. Draft or cash should be ok. Check with issuing bank quoting number of draft.

2/. Sign VLC and post to Shannon. Job done.

3/. Tell the truth and you'll be fine. Tell them you are selling as seen and that no warranty is implied.

Always have prospective buyer come to your home. Never meet "somewhere handy" - it can be dangerous. Have all paperwork to hand. NCT's, bills, and any service history. Always start car from cold - any buyer will be rightly suspicious if the engine is prewarmed.
Make sure the car is neat, tidy, and clean. Have it serviced. Don't give a buyer any reason to dislike the car.
Price it sensibly. Look at other similarly aged cars, with similar mileages. Look at dealers sites/ads and expect to get 10% less than their prices.
Offer a test drive, but insist on at least asking buyer to confirm 3rd party cover. If he/she drives to fast, insist they slow down.

HTH.

That's exactly what I needed to know guys. Thanks for that. I hadn't even thought about the test drive scenario.

I'm not very familiar with drafts so do you know if they are usually made out to a name or made out to 'cash'? I presume I can't check the draft afterhours.

The buyer is unlikely to have a draft for 6k on him when he agrees to the sale. Explain that you will need to check during banking hours.

Maybe you could offer to meet him at a bank when he is picking up the draft.

Most sensible buyers will also look for proof from you that there is no finance outstanding on the car.... if there is, they become liable once they purchase it!
