We were promised 1k for legal fees with KBC once we mortgaged with them. Once we got the mortgage, I checked with the Broker who assured me that the money would go into our account after we make our first mortgage payment. That was a year ago and he keeps saying to contact the Ombudsman as there is nothing he can do for us. Has this happened to anyone before? I rang KBC about it and they said it was nothing to do with them, it was between the broker and the salesguy for KBC.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

No. Unfortunately, it's not on the offer letter. It's word of mouth of broker and he is sympathetic enough about it, but says that it's up to me to take it up with Ombudsman against KBC. I only have emails of me asking continuously about it. It's advertised on KBC's website still for new business, but according to the Broker, he spoke with the salesman for KBC and the salesman said the policy changed after I had applied for it. However, there' s no documentation about this or anything, just what the Broker is telling me.

this sounds really dodgy... I'd be quite suspicious of the broker

is he saying the offer only came into effect after you took up your mortgage. I would write to KBC and ask if they paid the money to the broker!

Thank's for the response. I rang KBC and explained a long time ago, but the girl just said that because it was a mortgage by a broker, it would have to be dealt with by the broker. I'm just really sick and tired of trying to ask the broker to contact KBC on my behalf. He had said he rang them at that time but when I spoke with them they said they knew nothing about it. I'm thinking of taking it to small claims court or something. I was delighted at the time about it as it would help with the legal fees, and keep being reassured by him all the time that we would get it.

I enquired directly to KBC about this offer in March this year.
It was available then on a specific "Money Saver mortgage" - the variable rate on this was 3.28% APR which I think was slightly higher than the normal KBC variable rate offered to new customers .

If you had nothing in writing from KBC about the €1k- you have no case with them really.
You may have got the "standard" mortgage at the lower rate - maybe the broker cocked it up ?
The broker will have made a good commission from KBC - so maybe he/she would be willing to pay you €500 as a goodwill gesture?

hmmm.... interesting and simple explanation.... surely if this was the case the broker could simply explain it. maybe I am too suspicious!!
