0800 phone numbers

I know there's been a number of threads on phone scams where you miss a call with a strange number and when you phone back your hit with a premium charge. I've got a number of missed calls at home from an 0800 number. Is this a scam? As far as I can find out 0800 is a UK freephone number but is there more to this and if it was a UK number surely it would have +44 800 not simply 0800. Any info on this would be appreciated.

Have had these missed calls from an 0800 number on my home phone for the last few days & so has my sister. Both of us are ex-directory.... Tried calling it back on the mobile and the message said "this call will be charged at £1.90 per minute..." so must be U.K. based. Needless to say I hung up sharpish!

I have never understood peoples fixation & panic to find out about a missed call.
If its important they would have left a message or they will ring back.

Yes - especially in light of previous threads - I would never ring back without a message. However I was just interested to find out what the angle was here
