bike never taxed. new owner. help.

Hi. I'm buying a 06 scooter (suzuki katana) for a very good price from a friend today. It is a great buy with less than 700klm on the clock and has not been used for the best part of a year.

The problem is this: My friend bought the bike brand new from well known dealer in 2006 and never received the log book. He also never tried to get it due to lazyness. He was insured for a year and NEVER TAXED the bike! So i'm about to buy it but it hasn't been taxed at all. I would like to rectify this and was wondering how to go about it. Is it best to sort out the tax first and then transfer ownership. Or should i first track down the log book, transfer the ownership and then deal with the tax? What way will it work? Will arrears need to be paid?

The bike is only really being bought as a run around. I have the car for the rainy days. As i'm only paying 500 for the bike i'll be left with any other expenses so i'd like to avoid this.

Your friend needs to contact the dealer urgently. If no joy there, apply for a "replacement" registration document to Shannon. When that arrives, he needs to pay the back tax on the vehicle, then sign a delaration in a Garda station that the bike has been off the road for aperiod. When all of this is taken care of, both sign the registration and send it to Shannon to transfer ownership to you.

Don't touch the bike until this is taken care of or you may be getting official communications. Its his responsibility to sort this out. I'm assuming the bike has a valid registration number, an engine number and a VIN plate...

the bike is legit. we've been friends for years and i was there when he bought it from the dealer. turns out that all this trouble started because he didn't tax the bike. Thats why he didn't get a log book. i've taken care of it as he would never get round to it...doesn't have the brains or the motivation. We filled in transfer of ownership and got a declaration of non use stamped in the cop shop. So i'll be able to sort out the ownership dox tomorrow.

i thought all you had to do was get the guard to sign saying it was off the road, and you do not need to back pay the tax !
did this before for a car and scooter...

When you come to pay tax on it you are not responsible for non-payment of road tax for the period prior to your ownership. It's part of the "Past Ownership Period". You only pay tax from when you buy.
