Not sure where this post should go or what title it should have. I have lost my job because of the downturn. Am still optimistic about getting another one. Just wondering what percentage of AAMers are in the same boat?!

Well i have 2 jobs. 1 is a gov job and should be fine. The other is a business which is busy at the moment and bookings are healthy for next yr.

I have a small mortgage and don't think things will hit us too hard ( wife is civil servant as well ) .

But having the 3rd source of income really helps when it comes to holidays etc, we don't have to cut back. But what we do we work hard for ! getting in at 4am and up for work 3 hrs later ain't pretty on a Friday morning.

I have 2 friends who lost their job this week and another who was asked to move to the London office as there is no job for him in this country anymore.

I haven't lost my job per se, but all overtime etc. has gone and am no longer on commission. Instead we were given a €1 per hour wage increase which in no way meets what I used to earn on commission - am about €200 pcm worse off without the commission.

I know of plenty of people in the last few weeks that have had to take cuts c20% and some who have been let go. Will be looking over my own shoulder for a while now because a couple of slack months in the year are enough to hurt companies now.

Suffice to say, it's not a good time to be working in property :( I've recently taken a second, part time job as a precaution.

I know of a few people doing that. It might be extra hours but its peace of mind when it comes to the bills.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. It's a bit of a juggle and tiring..not to mention I never have a "day off" where I don't have to be somewhere. As you said though, it's peace of mind and at least if (or more accuratly when) one goes I have something to fall back on.

well i've worked 2 jobs for a number of years. In the boom it was great, we had a great lifestyle. But it is tiring and i do take sundays off.

I haven't had a week off since Feb and next week off is next Jan so its hard work but needs must. My parents also told me when there is work there take it, you never know when it is going to dry up !!!

Unfortunately we have an unofficial pay freeze. However the company I’m with does seem to be weathering the storm quite well. Then again I may be eating my words in the near future.

I didn`t think there was much call for precautions these days...:D.I`ll get me coat.....

My sister-in-law and her partner are closing down their shop this weekend.

Last year they moved to a newer bigger premises and were doing a decent turnover. Over the Summer, there has been a steady decline in trade and, some days, it's not worth opening up as the day's takings wouldn't cover the light & heat used, let alone pay them a wage.

I’ve cut my own wages by 30%. The next step will be sacking people but it doesn’t look like that’s required at the moment.

How someone can be 'giving their all' in their day job on 3 hrs sleep a night all weekdays, I can't understand. Probably best for the poster that is it the public sector.

And if that doesn't get the public sector people up on their high horse nothing will. :D .........even if it is true. rofl.

For me it seems there is little chance of losing my job, unless something goes seriously wrong. However, having said that the workload is less than half what it was last year and I feel like I'm going backwards and really losing motivation so I don't really want to stay. Both my hubby and I are in construction and for him it is probably just a matter of time so we are looking to put a 'plan b' in operation.

Oh look another low blow to the civil servant. I also did it for a number of years while in the private sector.

Do you have a legit comment to make or just a jibe at the public sector ????

It mightn't be what you want to hear Ron B but I do think rmelly has a point here. You wouldn't be much use to me if you only got 3 hours sleep every single night - sure how could you remain focussed and sharp if that's all the sleep you get? I admire your dedication to hard work and I guess it depends on what you do but if it's a job requiring you to use your brain a lot, or deal with people for that matter, I can't see how you could be doing this to a high level with that amount of sleep. I know I'd be a walking zombie!

It was a 'legit comment'. Ignoring which sector you work in, how does your employer feel about the second job, as you say yourself '[it] ain't pretty on a Friday morning'? Can I ask what type of work you do? I'm assuming the second job is dj'ing...

I kinda feel bad saying it, but we are busier than we ever have been. Recently hired more staff (3) and have plenty to do for the foreseeable future. Saying that this time of year is always busy for us.
