buying a car up the country

im based in limerick and a car that might interest me is in a garage around 20 mins north of dublin.

they are saying they will give me 3 months warranty. but what worries me is the fact that if something goes wrong i'd have to haul it up to their place again. can i suggest to them that if something goes wrong with it, the local dealer will fix it or what? or am i simply taking a risk and it is tough luck if something goes wrong?

it is a vw golf 1.6 with 60,000 miles, automatic fyi

I wouldn't buy a 1.6 automatic golf anyway, it wouldn't pull you out of bed - but if i was in your position I would source the car closer to home - shouldn't be that hard.

i assume you mean powerwise yeah? im on a 1.4 at the moment which is a peugeot and a horse would move off quicker. why do you say not a 1.6 automatic?

What exactly are you basing that assumption on? Have driven the 1.6 FSI with 6 speed auto box and its a nice drive. Kicks down well, cruises well and there's also a sports mode in the auto box as well as semi auto.. I liked it

Mufc77, I would doubt that a dealer further afield would come to any arrangement for local warranty for you - but I could be wrong.

You could always get the car independently inspected to further reassure you.

Thd DSG Gearbox is savage and I agree it's not bad with the fsi engine but the standard 102hp 1.6 is very slow.

I was being presumptious assuming that it is the last model but if it is I would steer clear. My dad owns a 2002 1.6 auto in spain and i don't like it one bit. I drive it every time I am over there and it is a terrible box.. I am a golf lover and have driven the last two models with differet engines and boxes including a 2003 1.6 manual so I know what that car is like to drive in both manual and automatic. I have a 140hp GT manual at the moment and it is fantastic in both manual and Auto.

MUFC 77 how old is the golf

E22k for a 2004 golf with E60k mileage. Yelp!!!

What do the Revenue reckon the open market selling price should be.

In 4 years time that's going to be an 8 year old car with a very small residual value. Are you sure you are doing the right thing.

I wouldn't normally dream of buying new but how much would one cost.

i saw that in the window, but it is listed as 14.950 on the website. dealer said the same price on the phone this morning.

Two owners on a 4 year old car. Mileage may be genuine but I'd definitely look at getting an AA report.

Also why is there no number plate on the car?. Is it an import or have the garage a genuine reason for taking it off?

I'm not trying to put you off the car or anything, it's just I'm sure you would rather know what your getting before travelling.

i agree, if it was a private sale it would be more of a reason to take the number plate off

thanks ccraig but i wouldn't go the route of buying privately off anyone, and the number plates appear slightly chavvy aswell :D

interesting that you including the vrt with that so that answers that question. but why do insurance companies and sometimes dealers ask you is it a uk car?

Autoexchange in Limerick will sort you out.

Every car they sell is given a full AA check by an AA mechanic.

Try

They have also just opened a new showroom in Naas

hey mufc,
buy from an ni garage then instead, chance are the garage selling you one in the republic has bought it in ni or uk, so no point in just taking the hit on the margin
