Any body any opinions on these. Is it really just a tarted up 1.4 model, or is there more to it. Was interested in a TDi Golf, but one of these might have better fuel economy and cheaper tax.

The engine is the big thing about this car, its a 1.4L with a turbo and a supercharger and puts out 140bhp which would equate to a normal 1.8L to 2.0L engine. Its supposed to have almost diesel like economy with the sporting appeal of a petrol. I dont know if the extra you would spend on one of these would be recouped when selling it on as many people will say as you did "tarted up 1.4L" and wont pay more for it. For similar money the diesel will be a better bet.

If economy and tax are your main concerns, go for the diesel.
If they are not then why not spend a little extra and get the GTI

The GT comes in 140 bhp and 170 bhp.

Drove both and loved them, the GTI is 1.8t and is being robbed from peoples houses for sport at the moment ask your ins company.

This is a lovely car with 1.4 on the tax book and insurance. Not on the list of cars people are getting robbed, has the economy of 1.4 (if you drive it properly) and no dirty diesel smell or noise.

If tax is a concern then avoid the diesel !!! Big engines cost more to tax remember !!!!

Just to point out that The 140 BHP 1.4 is not sold under 'GT'
Only the 170 BHP 1.4 is sold under 'GT'

Thanks for the feedback. One of the reasons I would not consider the GTI is the fact that it would be a real target and I would be afraid of being broken into for the keys.

I am hoping that the GT will not get the same reputation because of the fast engine.

Economy will not be as good as a cooking 1.4 due to the supercharger being in use from idling speed regardless of whether or not you use a lot of throttle. Driven quickly it'll actually be fairly heavy on fuel.

These cars are loaded for insurance purposes, and are being redesigned by VW, as they look "too ordinary" and are very pricey.

If a thief wants your car badly enough, he will somehow get it.

Thats true but the more desirable a car, the more likely it will be targeted. You can buy a less desirable car but theres always a chance it could be stolen. Its just less likely. Once you have CCTV, a tracker and the usual security alarm imobiliser theres not much more you can do. Thats what insurance is for. The 1.4 140/170 is quite expensive for it is IMO.

At the moment I drive a Peugeot 307 1.4 and I dont think I need worry about someone breaking in for the keys. Just concerned that anything flashy for fast would be a target. Friend of mine was broken into for the keys of their Audi, leaving all the other executive cars, such as Passats, etc on the road safe as houses.

I am security concious living on my own without worrying about someone coming in for the car keys, and like it or not thats the society we live in. Another girl I know her brothers house was broken into in Leixlip purely to get the keys of the brand new landcruiser. Police told him the car was the target and it would have been shipped out of the country straight away.

Modern cars are difficult to break into if you don't know what you're doing. Joy Riders tend to target older cars which are easier to break with a crowbar!

I own a fast BMW....never been broken into and no one has even tried. A few years back I owned an old banger and came down one morning to discover it up on bricks...or in this case...up on no bricks.

I've no knowledge of other types of car thievery but there is theft to order going on out there as well...different type of thief though.

Personally I wouldn't go near the GT...but that's just me. I would tend to agree with RS2K's earlier comments. Go for the GTI. And if you're feeling really frivolous go for the R32 :D

Agreed, just because a car is 'targetted' shoudlnt put you off buy one. As an earlier poster said, if a thief wants your car they'll get it no matter how. I get the feeling you are conservative in your choice and reasons. At the end of the day it is your choice and everyones views here are their own. Personally I want to buy a porsche or Audi S5 as my next car and I would let thieves put me off. That's like not wanting to live in a nice house in case thieves want to break in.
As others have said, the GT probably isn't for you.
A GTI (the 2 L turbo) owner for the past 2 years and longer touch wood!

Would love the GTI, but think the Golf Tdi might be the way to go for me. My other half has just inherited an Audi A3 (2.0 Tdi) as a Company Car and its a rocket. I think something a little more toned down might be better if I want to hold onto my licence.

Will start looking at Tdi's maybe 2005 - 2006, have to get rid of my Peugeot first, the trade in's are terrible at the moment.

A friend of mine was carjacked for a 8yr old Punto on his driveway. Was used in a robbery later. Normal cars are useful for staying low key apparently.

892896, if you wanted to really get picky.

There now called the GT sportline, 140 bhp & 170 bhp. Soon a 122bhp will be available.

When they were badged as TSI (140 bhp) GT (170 bhp) but that was like last month! Please keep up.

I personally wouldn't be bother with a 1.4 tsi. I can imagine the insurance would be alot. You can be sure they are no fools and will be sure to cash in on the fact that it's supercharged. Also this engine is mad expensive.Tdi still gives better mpg. I would spend the little extra and go for the 2.0 tdi. Sure the tax is cheap, FOR NOW on a 1.4. Remember the greens are in government now. They want to introduce a carbox tax, which is bad news for petrol drivers. What they should do is Reduce the vrt so that people can afford more modern, and most important less CO2 emitting diesel cars. That isn't going to happen. There would be a mad loss of revenue. So why not buy second hand and let someone else pay the tax.??? Why are people so willing to hand over such money when there is so many good quality used cars out there?

I don't think cars being broken into are the problem...it's waking up to the sight of some lowlife at the bottom of your bed with a baseball bat which is the real worry.
I changed my car recently and tried the GT, the GTI and the R32.
The GT makes sense financially but there's a feeling that it's struggling all the time...working itself to the max and shaking. The GTI is a great performer and very similar to the R32 which only comes into its own when you go above 70MPH. The problem I had with the R32 was the theft issue...they're a real target! Great drive though. I think pound for pound the GTI is the better car though.
