Do people on disability allowance have to pay the property tax?

Hi Folks

I am thinking ten years down the line here. I am currently living with my parents and i am on disability allowance. They are leaving me the house. We got the property tax for our house today and it came to 350 euro. Now i will give them a bit towards it. But i doubt i will be able to pay the full thing when they pass away and i am the sole occupant of the house.

So i am just wondering whether i can get out of paying this tax, given i am on disability allowance? Is there any allowance towards it? If i could get it for a 100 euros i would pay no bother. 350 euros i just dont have.

thanks in adavance.

There is no exemption for persons on Disability Allowance (or any other social welfare payment). LPT payments can be made on a monthly basis, they don't have to be paid in one lump sum.

There may be an exemption from LPT or a reduction in the rate for a property that has been adapted for a person with a disability. See Revenue guidelines here

I could probably just about pay it. But it would be tight and i would rather save the money for a rainy day.

I see online that you can get a deferral. How long can I get that for?

If you are worrying ahead about paying a relatively small amount on property tax, how are you going to pay all the other household bills, maintenance, insurance etc. Property tax has been kept very low since 2013, expect much higher charges in the future. Perhaps you may have to consider downsizing to a smaller apartment so you will be able to live within your means.

Can i defer this until i die and then when the house is sold, they will take the money out of the sale of the house?

Not even sure what i will with house when i die. Maybe leave it to charity or something.

I assume i can do this, given i have got no replies, that i can defer payment until i die and the house is sold. I dont mind doing this.

I really think people on disability allowance should get some kind of waiver for this though. I want to work but given my disabilities i cannot.

I wouldn't assume anything based on no replies. Contact revenue in order to get confirmation either way. Unless your parents are very elderly or currently in bad health then I don't see the point in worrying about it until they die. At that point you could sell the house and buy a cheaper property, leaving you with money in the bank and a smaller property tax.

See here for deferral options, not interest accrues on the balance.

But can i defer it (on the grounds of low income) until i die and then when my house is sold, they take the money from that? I dont mind doing that. I dont have any partner or children, so i would probably have to sell the house and distibrute the money to charities or something. I cannot take it with anyhow, to heaven. :)

The application form is linked on that page. You can defer in full so long as your total income is less than €15k, or defer 50% if total income is less than €25k. It does not state there is any limit on deferral, perhaps the application process will clear that up. You need to re-apply each year.

There is a disability exception on property tax and tax is only paid on the part you are not using. A person on disability allowance that uses say half of the house then there is no charge to that part of the house. You might want to reassess the value. Check citizens information.
If you are not disabled you can defer but I think there is interest added to the charge but not sure.
