Hi,
We have a joint mortgage together with my ex and now I want to take another mortgage on my own. Last Friday, I got in touch with AIB, which is where we have the joint mortgage, and they say I could take a new mortgage as "moving house" but that the original mortgage would be recategorised as a "let to buy" one, even though my ex will be living there and paying her part of the mortgage. is that the normal rule? no house will be rented.
Thanks in advance.

I suspect that there was some misunderstanding. Did they realise that your ex is still living there?

I think you should try to get your ex to buy out your share of the jointly owned property and for her to take over the mortgage. That is the cleanest approach.

Hi Brendan, thanks for your comment.
I mentioned several times on the call to AIB that she will continue living in the house because it seemed weird their answers...
Unfortunately she won't be able to buy me out, or remortgage it on her own, so tomorrow I'll call a broker and find out other options.

Something I forgot to mention, we weren't married. I don't know if that changes anything.
