I've recently received an e-mail from someone that I vaguely know which states:

My name,

I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.

- Their name

I'm not a member of LinkedIn and have no interest in becoming a member.

There's a clickable button on the e-mail which states "Confirm that you know (Persons name)"

If I click this, considering I'm not a member presumably it's just going to want me to sign-up. Would this be a correct presumption?

If so, I could maybe just send an e-mail to the person to inform them I'm not a member of LinkedIn.

If I attempt to reply to the e-mail it does come from the e-mail address of the person whom I vaguely know.

It's a pretty common issue when people sign up to Linkedin. It asks for access to their email contacts, but I don't think it's that clear in the next few steps that it will send an invite email out to all those contacts. Half the time the person isn't aware they've sent the invites until they get angry emails.

Just ignore is the best advice.

There are spam Linkedin emails, but they tend to be from people you've never heard of.

These are legitimate emails. There is an option on linkedin to invite all your contact list to join up on linkedin. You will also get email reminders. If you don't want to join, just ignore. The person that you vaguely know is likely to have sent you or received an email from you in the past or added your email address to try to get you to join. LinkedIn is not facebook.

These are legitimate emails.

99% of these emails I receive are spam that do not originate from LinkedIn. Most of them spoof urls that lead to sites other than LinkedIn.

It's best ignore the email and just use a browser (of the LinkedIn app on your smartphone/tablet) to log in directly to LinkedIn. Once you log in, you'll see a notification if you do have a legitimate invite.

I mustn't get these as the emails that I have received are legitimate, mostly Irish and connected to me in one or another. Maybe my settings are stricter than the Smythe?

I'm the same, I'm a very active user and have never got these kind of mails either....

The emails Leo and myself refered to are not related to Linkedin (though they send enough emails to be worthy of the spam label at times), they are phishing emails from scammers that look like an Linkedin connection notifications. It's nothing to do with settings or use of Linkedin, the same way the fact that I'm not a PTSB customer hasn't stopped me getting emails regarding my PTSB Online account being locked and I should really, really click this link.

As Leo says, best to ignore all emails and check notifications directly through the website or app.

The email the OP got was the standard annoying email when a contact sets up a Linkedin account and either deliberately (or usually unknowingly) sends an invite to everyone in their email contacts.
