What will affect your Credit Rating?

Does anybody know what factors are taken into account when a lender is checking your credit history?

I think I have a fairly good credit history but I have been running up large credit card debts recently (€10,000). I made regular payments on time paying off the whole debt and now has been totally cleared.

I hope to apply for a loan for a car soon and I am wondering if the above will affect the decison. The credit card I had was MBNA which I believe records payments of credit cards with the ICB.

Once you didn't miss any payments -- it may actually count in your favour.
