Water heating

We just moved in Ireland and don't really understand our heating system. There is a switch for hot water, on/off. There is also a timer, for heating the house. If the switch is on, but the timer is off, the water heats, but not the house. If the switch is off, nothing heat. So to heat the house, we need to turn the switch and the timer on. So why is there a timer? since it work heat if the switch is off, the timer is kind of useless...unless I'm missing something.

So how does the house ever heat ? I suspect you have an immersion switch beside your internal tank for heating the sink and bath water. This also probably has a timer with it. This is to allow you to start the water heating for a bath in the morning by switching the hot water switch on but making sure the timer only starts at about an hour before you get up rather than having to get up and switch the water on and waiting till it heats.

Can you post pictures of the switch / timer?

What form of heating do you have? Any chance it's electric storage heating and using night-saver electricity?
