Does anyone know if unemployment benefit entitlement is from the date one applies for it or from the date of unemployment? Ie if you thought you werent entitled to UB and didnt apply but subsequently applied and were entitled - are you entitled to back payment to the date the period of unemployment began or just the date the application was submitted? This is the benefit based on stamps paid, rather than means tested...

In my experience it is from the date you actually sign on in the SW office i.e notify them of your claim unless this has changed recently.

I signed on a couple of years ago a few days after being made redundant and the SW took the actual termination date, and not the date of signing on, as the start of my unemployment. I think that once you have some documentation proving your date of termination (e.g. a letter from your employer, your P45 and/or an RP1 redundancy notice form) then they will take that date as the start of unemployment and backdate if necessary.
