as self assessment is looming and i have not submitted a reeturn yet as this is my first time - is there any calculator that will give me a rough idea of how much i need to put aside for my tax return - how are the sums worked out?

The ROS offline application will do this, www.ros.ie you need the Form 11 part.

As to how are the sums worked out.........if you really want the works on this you need to swallow the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997. Too much to say on a post like this.
