Hi,
Last year I became very ill with Chicken Pox and I also developed pneumonia. I ended up being hospitalized, and eventually put on a life support machine for a few days. In all I spent two weeks in hospital.
When I came out I still suffered from a severely chesty cough. When I went back to my consultant for my check up, he told me the cough was normal, and to continue my life as normal and the cough would clear up itself in time. This was June '06. In April of this year I was again hospitalized, once again suffering from pneumonia. I was under a different doctor this time, in a Bons Secours hospital. I was kept in for a week, and the doctor told me that she was of the opinion that the pneumonia had been there since the previous summer and that it had never actually cleared up. She then referred me to a chest specialist up the country for further tests.

I had these tests a month ago, and again ended up staying in hospital for another week. While there, I was tested for MRSA, and it was found in my nose, and in my lungs. The doctor said it was quite likely that I had picked it up last year when I was ventilated. Because it is in my lungs, they feel that is partly the reason why I've be sick so many times since I first picked up the pneumonia.

So am I entitled to any financial compensation because of this? I went to hospital to get better, not worse which is what has happened! It doesn't seem right that you can go in with one ailment, and come out after picking up another one, that is due to the poor hygiene in the hospital!

Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks

I'm not so sure that AAM is the right place to be asking this question - you should get qualified legal advice.

el-jimbo, compensation for anything depends on what evidence you can produce. If you have the medical evidence to support your case you should see a solicitor who specialises in this field. That actress off the TV (her name escapes me) got a hefty payout in the UK. She contracted the MRSA virus while hospitalised. Lesley Ash ( just remembered )
