Hi Folks
We’ve been on the above plan for past three years and is up for renewal on 1st December. The premiums has gone up every year and looking for a similar plan that costs less.

We are 2 adults & 2 kids on Laya’s “Flex 250 plus” plan
Don’t mind paying a higher excess and not too pushed on day to day cover
We would like to keep access to Galway Clinic

Any help on alternatives would be greatly appreciated please?

Hi rco20000,

Your current plan 'Flex 250 Plus' is way overpriced for the level of cover included, there are several alternative options
with better cover and cheaper prices.
Adult Options; The following plans have good hospital cover, with limited or no day to day cover.

1. Laya Essential Health 300; price 895pa; all public + private hospitals covered; private hospital excess 300 x 2 max for all admissions per year.
Day case excess 125 per procedure. Limited day to day cover.

2. Irish Life Benefit 2; price 788pa; selected list of public + private hospitals covered; this list includes 3 Galway public hospitals and
Galway Clinic (note Bons Secours Galway is not covered). Private hospital excess 300 per admission and day case excess is 150.
Limited day to day cover. If you are happy with the choice of hospitals available, this is a good option at a very good price.

Adult Options; The following options have good hospital cover including good day to day cover.

1. Laya Simply Connect; price 1100pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered; private/hi-tech hospital excess 150 x 2 max
per year for all admissions. Day case excess 50 per procedure. Good day to day cover included 50% refund for gp, consultant, dental, physio etc
subject to a total max refund of 500 per year.

2. Control 300 Create; price 1079pa(from 1/12/2018); all public, private(including private room fully covered) and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered,
private/hi-tech hospital excess 300 per admission and day case excess 125 per procedure. Good day to day cover included refund of 80 per consultant visit, 30 per gp visit etc. The extra on this plan is private room fully covered in a private hospital ie Galway Clinic.

3. VHI Company Plan Plus Level 1.3; price 1128pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private/hi-tech hospital excess 150 per
admission and day case excess 50 per procedure. Good day to day cover included, 50% refund gp visits, consultant visits, etc upto a max of
1000 refund per year.

Childrens Options;
Note; Children can be on different plans to the adults with the same company.

1. Laya Essential Health 300; price 234(child offer where you just pay for the first child and the rest of the children are free) Note; this offer
applies from December 15th 2018, so you can choose Control 300 Create for December only and then switch the children to Essential Health 300
from January onwards. This plan has limited day to day cover. Full details as above.
So 1 month x 42 + 11 months x 19.50 = 257 per year.

2. Laya Control 300 Create; price 257 per child; If you prefer to include day to day cover, this plan is a good option. Full details as above.

3. Irish Life Nurture Plan; price 160 per child; public and private hospitals covered, private excess 300 x 2 max per year for all admissions,
day case excess 75 per procedure. Limited day to day cover.

4. VHI One + Plan; price 209 per child; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private/hi-tech hospital excess 125 per admission and
day case procedure.

There are plenty of alternative options to choose from without compromising on cover and some with extra cover at cheaper prices.

Thank you Snowyb for comprehensive reply and advice. preference is to stay with Laya, just a matter of choosing the best options from above. Never realized one could choose for one month and switch to another for the following 11 months

Yes, Laya and Irish Life allow you to change plans during the year within the same company if you want.
So, if a better offer becomes available at a later stage, you can always avail of it outside of renewal date.
Likewise, if a medical need arises say for increased day to day cover, you can switch at any stage, to cover this as there is no waiting
when upgrading day to day cover.
VHI are the only company NOT to allow switching plans outside of renewal date.
