How long have I got to sell principal private residence?

If I build a house in my garden and move into it, I know I have only a certain amount of time to sell my original house...before it is deemed to be an investment property and therefore liable for capital gains tax. Does any one know how long one has to actually sell the residence? And when does the clock start ticking ....and more importantly when does it stop? Thanks in advance and hope this is in the correct forum.
