Home House insurance from UK / Europe

I know in the past it was impossible to get house insurance from UK or Europe, but is this still the case?

With the increases in premiums and the economic dire straits, I am sure a lot of people will be asking this.

Although an EU directive came in that allowed other insurers from other countries offer insurance in ireland, i dont think any insurer has ever shown any interest. Obviously the likes of RSA, Allianz, Zurich Hibernian Aviva are worldwide anyways and have a local presence. But any insurer would need to consider the correct rating structure, etc so no one will offer it as a one off!

Other smaller underwriting companies have their main offices in europe and trade in this company with limited office space and use web based platforms through existing broker networks (Setanta insurance are an example of this). So the companies are here, but as anywhere else, market forces, claims ratio etc dictate the cost of insurance.
