Family Income Supplement

Hi there,
I have a query regarding the Family Income Supplement.
Currently my husband and I are both working, however with 3 young kids we have decided that I will leave work, as its hardly worth our while with the cost of childcare and stress.
We should qualify for the Family Income Supplement, which would help us a lot,as my husband is not on a high salary.
Today however when I went to hand in my notice, my employer suggested that I might be able to get a leave of absence instead for a few years.
If this was a possibility, would that mean we no longer qualify for the FIS?
I would love to have the leave of absence as a security blanket in case we can't cope financially, or my husband looses his job.
Does anyone know if we would we could still claim FIS if I'm not technically unemployed?
