external wall insulation

I saw some odd construction work going on at a house down the road from me. Wondered what it was so I took a cheeky peek..

Saw a load of polystyrene foam blocks and sheets lying about. Kept an eye on it over a few days

Turns out it was an insulation company doing a job on a house. They specialised in external wall insulation from the outside. Had never seen this done before.

The house was terraced so was wondering how this would work without affecting the houses either side.

They used polystyrene block work and it looked like some form of cement to shape and stick it to the front of the house. They took into account the windows, sills, doorway and drains etc. I was a bit skeptical at first.

After watching for a few days it actually started to take shap and looked pretty good. They did the whole front of the house and covered the polystyrene in some kind of render (assume it would have to go rock hard otherwise you could perforate the polystyrene?)

Lick of paint and Bobs your Uncle. Looks very smart and Grants of up to €4k available from SEI. It didnt seem to affect the neighbours houses at all either although Im sure it now juts out about an extra inch or 2.

Anyway just wondering if anyone else has seen or heard of such a thing.

Does Insulating a wall from the outside work? If so how does it compare to insulating the inside? (obviously one benefit is you dont lose the few inches on each wall)

Would you need some kind of planning permission because technically you are altering the front of your house?

Sorry about long post. Just thought it was interesting
