As executors of a deceased persons will are we entitled to know who the savings in the credit union have benefitted. Are these saving part of the deceased estate and do we declare them to bank or probate. If asked about the savings can we legally refer any person to the credit union chairperson.

"Nomination

A free service offered by the mathepac Credit Union to their members is that of a “Nomination”. As a member, you can nominate a person or persons to become entitled on your death to any property that you may have in the mathepac Credit Union.

The nomination service is very valuable to members in that it allows access to nominated funds by the nominee within a very short period of the death of the member. The following are some points to note about this nomination service:
  • A nomination is valid up to the amount of €23,000
  • Any member aged 16 or over may make a nomination.
  • The most recent nomination invalidates any previous nomination.
  • You may change your nomination at any time.
  • Please note that a marriage will revoke any nomination made prior to the marriage.
This facility is provided by the mathepac Credit Union free of charge. We would advise all members to make a nomination when joining and to regularly review your nomination thereafter.

Nominations can be made and subsequently amended easily. Nominations must be completed, or amended by attending the credit union offices as completion of the necessary documentation must be witnessed by an Officer of the credit union. Please contact us if you require further details."

Property nominated in this way passes to the nominated person outside of the estate is are not the responsibility of the executors. I doubt if you can obtain the name of the nominated person, but why would this interest you?

You might want to check if the deceased person was a member the CU's free life insurance scheme which pays out €1,300 in the event of the death of a member.
