me and some friends want to drive around the coastline of ireland and stop in lots of random tiny places

has anyone ever done such a journey? if so, and advice/travel tips/stories are much appreciated.

Try to get to Fanore in West clare, Wild storm beaches at the bottom of a mountain. Burren landscape.

Also in Clare try Liscannor - lovely bar and restaurant -

North of Sligo try Mullaghmore - lovely coastline walks overlooked by the majestic privately owned Classiebawn Castle (formerly owned by the late Lord Mountbatten).
West Cork is beautiful as is Donegal. The north coast of Antrim is also beautiful with lots to see but maybe you are trying to avoid the obvious tourist spots ! If not then:
Waterford - Ardmore and Dunmore East worth a visit.
Gaeltacht area of Connemara, Carraroe, Leitir Mor then up to Clifden.
Mayo - Wesport, Achill, Bellmullet,

Happy motoring...

Have a look in a wee book called 'AA Best Drives of Ireland', it splits the country into regions and gives some good tips for coastal drives.

Make sure to include Coast of Antrim on your itinerary, particularly Portstewart to Bushmills taking in Dunluce Castle, Carrick-a-Reed rope bridge and the whiskey distillery ;-)
