i have bought shares in two different companies. i am looking on their website and i am trying to establish when is their dividends payable. On their websites they have two different dates noted for dividends. one is "Stock goes ex-dividend on Irish stock exchange" and the other is "record date for dividend" which of these notes when the dividends is payable and when the shares have to be in my pocession so i can get a dividend?

The record date for dividend, at any rate, is the cut off date for determining which shares receive the dividend. So, one has to have bought shares by that date in order to receive a dividend at all. Don't know about the other reference I'm afraid.

To receive a div you must own the stock in question prior to it going ex. div., the date of which is announced on the record date. Information relating to forthcoming dividends usually contains a payment date which is the date the dividend payments are actually made.
