I asked this question the other day - would someone who is suffering from ulcerative colitis be entitled to disability allowance? This person - my sister actually - is already on carers allowance, she cares for her partner. During last year she developed this illness and cannot do the 15 hours work per wk carers are allowed to do by the Dept.
They are struggling at the moment and if she could claim disability she could retain half of the carer's allowance which would give them something like an extra 90 euro. Also it would mean that if her partner were to die she would not have to go on jobseekers and be hounded by the Dept to go back to work. It would be possible for her too then to keep her household benefits package. She is nearly 56 and has been out of the workforce since she married at 19 except for a brief period after her marriage broke up. She is not receiving any maintenance from her ex husband.
