Charity event

I am a mature student and recently our group organised an event whereby we were asked to raise sponsorship and we would be donating to charity after paying expenses.

It seems that the head of the course said that some of this sponsorship money should be used by the college and basically what ever is left give to the charity. I am not comfortable with this as when we approached friends families or companies it is implied that we are looking for support and helping a charity.
Can we inform the Dept Head that no these monies are for the charity and not for the college?

Did you get a permit in order to be able to collect the sponsorship? If so it should be clearly stated on it where the money is to go.
It sounds to me like the college are trying to pull a fast one. Has he said exactly why the college should get some money and for what use it will be put?
I would report this.
