Canadian/American debt brought in to marriage law’s

Hi I am looking for some information for a friend of mine. She has recently become engaged to an American and she is a Canadian. He has a fairly substantial medical debt, and they have not set a date yet because they are worried that she could become libel or responsible for that debt.

Is this at all possible under any circumstance? Do the law's vary in each country or are the pretty much the same on this matter. And if the answer is yes could something like a prenup or pre marriage contract avoid it? Is there any way to avoid it?
