Depending on what business you're in you can hire specialist ones. I've dealt with pr companies before and felt ripped off. Would advise you ask for an hourly breakdown of what they are actually doing, though i don't know if this is standard request. I got monthly reports on tje publicity, but didn't feel that these related to specific work the company had done, but were taking credit for.
