Blood tests in immediate aftermath of in-patient med investigations

I was admitted to hospital on 2 occasions recently as part of medical investigations to determine diagnosis for a medical complaint. A few weeks on and we are none the wiser. The consultant has requested that I have another blood test carried out.

I don't have a medical card - have had all of this covered by GloHealth - via a Private Hospital. Can I have the blood test taken at the hospital and billed to GloHealth?

Policy = NetMost 500

Not in my experience.
That would be viewed an an outpatient expense, but you may be able to claim some back as part of your excess depending on your policy

Yes, that's the way it worked out. Also have a follow up consultation with specialist - which is out of pocket rather than through insurance (although I think I can get a few quid back - have to check policy).

If you are attending a private consultant can you get a note for the bloods to be done and get them completed at a public hospital for free ?
Would a public hospital send results to a private hospital consultant as the referring doctor ?
If not, might you get the note from your GP who can forward the results to you directly or to the consultant ?

If your sent for a blood test by a private consultant, how does it work cost wise?
Is there one charge for all the blood tests you've to do - and if yes how much is that generally?
Or are you charged per test, for example, would there be a separate charge for an FBC, U and E, etc. and any other bloods your doing?

I've been private to a consultant who included the blood tests in his costs previously but am going to one soon who doesn't.

Thanks all for your posts. As it transpired, I have 2 separate health issues - both of which require some blood screening (most likely both will be ongoing). One item is via the public health system. The other item is via private healthcare.

As it transpired, it's been possible to have bloods done in phlebotomy at the public hospital for free (despite the consultant initially sending me to my GP for this purpose). In the case of the Private consultant, could only be done via my GP.

If - going forward - I have to have regular screening, I'm wondering if the public test results can be made available to the private consultant (on the basis that i'm having them done anyway). I guess I will put that question to those involved when my next appointment comes up.

When the nurse at my GP surgery takes bloods, they get sent to the public hospital. The results get sent back to my GP, but I think the public hospital still have all the records too. I am able to get a full copy of the results from my GP if I wish. I do have to pay €30 for the nurses fee. It would be free if I went to the public hospital with a form. But I'm happy to pay for the convenience.
You should be able to bring the blood results to the consultant yourself. I used to do this. The consultant filled out a form so it was clear which tests needed to be done. Then the nurse at the GP practice did the rest.
It is not unusual for patients to have their own test results. My son brings a disc with his recent MRI scan from the Radiology Dept in one clinic, to the Orthopaedic Consultant at another clinic.

(As I'm sure you're already aware - you need to ensure the right tests are done, and to know whether to fast or not! But if the nurse is taking blood anyway, it's just as easy to fill 4 vials as 1, once she uses the correct containers and forms)
