home swimming pool

Was somewhat thinking of getting a swimming pool built at home.

I have a side garden that would be ideal.

I guess the final pool would be 12x24 (feet).

I would have it up against the side of the house and could put a door from the bathroom into it. I would then like a conservatory style lean to roof over the whole thing.

Anybody done anything like this? what are the costs involved?
What about running costs?

I've often thought about it for when I'm almost mortgage free. Still a few years away yet though.

Google gave me [broken link removed] which look interesting enough.

fantastic idea. we have a above ground heated pool. just over 4ft deep and 15 ft round. kids love it in summer as does the husband. great when people come around. unfortunatly we are having building work done so no room for it anymore. will have to move to a bigger house to have one again!! i can imagine one like that though is very expensive. the above ground ones are dear enough let alone the built in ones. the cost of heating them is also very dear, especially that amount of water.

Hi,

Had anticipated it for new build which will not now be happening but attached to the new build it was costing in and around E100,000 just to house the pool - the pool itself was costing from E25000 to E30000 depending on size and that included a heat exchanger and the current that you swim against. I'd use swimming pool in health club 3 to 4 times per week and like the interaction of meeting other people. Maybe you will get cheaper prices now due to the recession. But if I could afford it and had nothing better to do with money it would be first on my wish list.

above ground kit would cost about 1000-1500. might have to take it down in winter but well worth it and much cheaper.

I suspect that 'status symbol' plays a part in this though...

Status symbol? sorry, no. It would get used and I see no point in having an outdoor pool. I don't have an opnion yet on whether an above ground or in ground kit is better, but either would have to be enclosed.

Well it would be for both to be honest. I could probably fit quite a long one in but then I would have to do a more comprehensive structure around it. I'm sure it would be more expensive to fit a current in a longer pool.

It's all looking very expensive!

well all i can say is that we loved our pool and the kids (teenagers) certainly did! you can always swim around like a fish lol.....costs a fraction of the price for the same amount of fun. i got a lot of my stuff from a place in england, http://www.jacksons-camping.co.uk/ they do diy pools and stuff. might be wortha trip over and renting a van if you cant sorce cheaper here.
