Adding spouse to your mortgage

I have been paying a mortgage in my own name for approx 6 years and having recently been married, I now want to add my wife to the mortgage.

I appreciate that this will no doubt involve a solicitor and the various fees that come with it.

Does anyone know of a rough idea of how much hassle this will cause us? Is it easily organised through your lender or is there loads of red tape?

Can my wife just take out a life assurance policy separately or do we have to start a new joint one?

Why do you want to do this?

I just assumed that it would have to be done for legal reasons?

Are you saying that I should just continue on paying the mortgage the way I am at present? I would have assumed that most married couples would put the mortgage in BOTH their names and covered it with insurance so that the mortgage is paid off should anything happen to either of them.

Perhaps you can cover this possibility without actually adding the 2nd name to the mortgage/deeds?

As you can tell I'm no expert on this!! Any advice appreciated.

I don't think that it's necessary. I seem to recall this issue cropping up a few times in the past but I can't locate any threads offhand right now...

I am hoping to get a chat to my banks' mortgage advisor next week, so I'll hopefully get some answers then.

Again clubman, thanks for your replies.

ClubMan is right -you don't have to do this. You could however add your spouse to the title ( you will need your bank to confirm and consent to the transfer) and keep the mortgage in your sole name which would be quicker and simpler. Alternatively if this was a good time for you to shop around for a better mortgage rate you could do the lot at the same time. Otherwise I wouldnt really bother.

Surely if her name was put on the mortgage she would be entitled to mortgage interest relief too depending on the size of your mortgage. This would certainly make it worthwhile adding her name.....

They are already entitled to the married relief even with one name on the mortgage/title deeds.
