Key for Ford Transit opens a Focus

Have a Ford Focus and know someone with a Ford transit van who said any Ford key will lock any other ford. So we tried it and sure enough the transit key locked the focus.

More worringly the Transit key also opens the focus. I'm wondering if this is a bizarre coincidence or is there something funny. Any one ever heard of this. Although it opened the focus it wouldn't start it.

this is possible alright due to the limited numer of key digits but it will not start the focus.all ford are only six digit combos

In the past we've were able to open a whole bunch of fords on a site with the same key. I would have thought with the newer fords this wouldn't happen.

The Transit is a 96 and the Focus is a 02. Think I'll follow Mr Beans example and put a big padlock on the door just to be sure.

Thanks for the replies.

Still means his golf clubs and laptop are gone out of the boot though.

Not too good.

Don't play golf and don't have a laptop. All they'd get is a basketball and some smelly runners. But I will keep an eye for ford drivers that do.

Could this be messy with insurance for theft from the car, they'd argue you never locked the car as there would be no sign of forced entry etc.

Anyone work with people that have fords. If 2 coleagues have fords then try it out. Could be interesting.

No. I have had two Fiestas and the keys only worked for my car, and I did try them in a few others. Even the remote central locking only worked for mine as I have often been parked near other Fords in car parks and their lights never flashed to indicate locking /unlocking.
