looking at buying a tv from an American website that say they will ship to anywhere in the world. Any problems with this?

Will it be PAL compatible?
Will it work off Irish electrical standards without a step down transformer?

As Clubman, The voltage in the states is 110Volts but we have 220Volts ask them if they can supply a 220volt version.

Our mains is also 50 Hertz while it is 60 Herts in the states.

Problems:
1: It will have to support PAL-I.
2: It will have to support our frequencies , eg UHF and VHF band 1 and 2 for Cablelink/NTL (or what ever it is called now).
3: Will it run on 230 Volts AC.
4: Will it run at 50 Hertz.

Item 1 is a show stopper. For 2 at worse you can get a seperate tuner. 3 Requires a transformer. 4 You can't easly convert 50 to 60 Hertz, but if you are good with electronics you might be able to reference signal source!

If it a small TV and runs off an external PSU when 3 and 4 should not matter, just replace it.

American tv runs on NTSC very few have PAL options. That coupled with voltage and frequency issues and the lack of service backup should tell you to run a mile.

Is it CE approved ?

My understanding is that 'CE approved'/CE Mark means nothing. Once a manufacturer is happy that they have produced their product to 'CE standards' they can put CE on it. Unlike the British Kite mark where products have to pass external testing.

To permit the use of a CE mark on a product, proof that the item meets the relevant requirements must be documented. Sometimes this is achieved using an external test house which evaluates the product and its documentation. Often it is achieved by a company-internal self-certification process.

Does it support teletext? Shipping would almost certainly render it more expensive than buying here or from the likes of Komplett.

And what are the odds it would get stopped for VAT etc.?
Quite high. It'll probably have to come by DHL or some such and they'll make you pay the VAT and charge extra for the customs clearance.

My advice: don't do it.

There's plenty of good value to be had here & it's much less hassle.

Also - if there are any problems then following up with the retailer or with the manufacturer's warranty will be easier with a local purchase in all likelyhood.

There's really no argument here. American TVs are useless in this country. Wrong voltage, wrong TV system.
