how to insulate void under timber floor

I have an old timber floor in my sitting room with about a 24 inch space underneath, and vents on outside wall. It is covered with carpet and good underlay but is very cold I'm looking for advise please as to the best way to fill this space other than with concrete
 
Look into 'foil faced foamboard' for underfloor insulation.. It should help with the acoustic properties of a wooden floor also.
