Time to paint my house again and wondering if any painters can tell me is one paint better another brand? Are farrow & ball paints any better than dulux or crown? McPhersons (sp?) is one used by professionals? Thanks

If you're thinking of painting the exterior, try Colourtrend paint. Very durable and good quality. Their interior paint isn't bad either. Plus its Irish made.

No affiliations, just a happy customer.

I would second Colortrend, they have a factory shop in Celbridge, Co Kildare. Excellent paint, I haven't used anything else for 20 years.

Thanks. It was for internal walls and also skirting. They have egg shell as the finish which must the modern equivalent of gloss for the wood. They have matt and soft sheen for the walls/ I didn't realise they were an Irish company. Was there not another Irish company in Celbridge? Maybe new name?

Have always found Dulux to be the best for ease of application, durability, and coverage.
The Weathershield is great for exteriors and there's a good colour choice;other brands seem to be just a few shades of cream and grey.

Fleetwood is not so good IMO.

Recently painted two kids bedrooms and after years using Dulux and Crown tried Colourtrend on the recommendation of the inlaws.

Found the staff in the Celbridge factory shop really helpful. I was trying to cover a feature wall we had painted with a seude effect paint years ago without having to go the painfull way of a full sanding. They give me some good advice and were very clear on the result I should expect.

Used the Ceramic Finish for the walls, which is a matt finish that can be scrubbed clean (a necessity with 3 kids) and egg shell on the wood work. Was easy to apply and got good coverage.

A bit more expensive but very happy with it.

There are differences in the paint color in terms of durability, quality, and thickness.
I would recommend California paint one of the best brands in paints.

I would recommend California paint one of the best brands in paints.

On Goggling this, I can only find the availability of these paints in California on the West Coast of the US.A long way to go for a few tins of undercoat !! Unless I'm missing something here, but are these paints available in Ireland ??

Loads of people recommending Colortrend but not really expanding in detail why?

What makes them so great? How they compare cost-wise to Dulux etc?

Their exterior paint lasts so much longer than their competitors. In one property, its has lasted 12 years without ay requireent for re-painting and in another Colourtrend hasn't been touched in 10 years. Both properties in very rustic locations.

It's a little bit more expensive than the others, but weigh it up. Paint that will last a dozen years versus others which will last five years. No rocket science required here.

Absolutely no connection whatsoever with the manufacturers or retailers.

I've a whole interior of a house to paint. And given that painting is coming towards the end of a lot of refurbishment works, my budget is naturally quite low.

I agree in investing in good quality products if it will work out better over their lifetime. However, right now I don't have the funds to invest in the best quality.

I'm looking for something that is reasonable value for money for reasonable quality. Over time I will probably invest in better quality paints on a room by room basis.

There is so many contrasting opinions on paint brands, it's very hard to make a decision!

PolkaDot, if I were you, I'd spend the money on Colortrend paint for the 'public' areas of the house (living room, kitchen, hallway). Leave off painting upstairs for six months if you have to, until you can afford the better paint.

For me at any rate, the labour is the biggest part of the job; I'd sooner wait until I had the funds, rather than do a cheapy job now & have to do it all over again next year.

Edit to add: Colortrend do big buckets of what they call Ceiling Paint. Its a flat matt white finish, covers very well and would be an ideal undercoat for new plaster. You could paint upstairs in this and then leave it alone & it'll look fine till you can afford to paint the final colour.
