Curious about this as well if anyone has any thoughts on it.

    Buying a diesel car nowadays

I was under the impression that particular myth has long been dispelled: https://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/electric-vehicle-myths#Myth2 Unless your driving your car very little miles every year - an EV is much better from an emissions standpoint.

    Need new plumber D8

I replaced my oil heating with a gas boiler and replaced all of the rads last week with Ray Duffy (Duffy Heating) and would highly recommend him. (Mods please take this down if I'm not allowed to name here).

Key Post Milestones to hit the Lifetime Pension Fund limit at age 60?

OP is back! I wanted to confirm that the intent behind the initial post was indeed to determine under which reasonable assumptions one could reach the current SFT by age 50 - with the intent then being the option of early retirement, if not early retirement itself. That could mean picking...

Key Post Milestones to hit the Lifetime Pension Fund limit at age 60?

That's very useful interested21 - it's exactly what I was looking for, thank you! Out of curiosity - once you've maxed out the pension relief - what's your personal decision around what to do with the excess? Do you go for finishing the mortgage first or for stock market investments? I know...

Key Post Milestones to hit the Lifetime Pension Fund limit at age 60?

What milestones should one hit (at ages 30/35/40/45) if you'd intend to hit the SFT limit at age 50? This is purely a thought exercise to do with early retirement planning. I know previously milestones like 500k at age 40 were mentioned if retiring at the regular pensionable age.

    Where to invest

Anon, just curious - what type of investments did you end up doing in the end from the list above?

<%> Inflation and break-even pay rises

@NoRegretsCoyote - interesting perspective. To the original question - if tax bands aren't indexed - that means a pay raise needs to be above inflation rate just to "stand still". It would be great if someone would develop a simple calculator website to use - that takes into account inflation...

<%> Inflation and break-even pay rises

Indeed, I've confirmed the above with the following example: Let's assume only one tax band of 50% exists (and there are no other taxes outside that), that kicks in at 40k and assume a yearly salary of 100k. Year 1 net income: 40k untaxed + 60k * 50% => 70k net income [...] 5% inflation...

<%> Inflation and break-even pay rises

With inflation approaching 4% - for someone that is paid at the higher marginal rate of income tax to break even after inflation (i.e.: not be paid less than the previous year), their annual pay rise should be double the inflation rate (8%). That would result in a net pay increase of (a bit less...

2022+ Best DIY investment options? (excluding pensions and housing)

With the deemed disposal rules coming in for US ETFs, what are the best remaining options for someone that’s already maximising pensions contributions and already has exposure to the housing market? (assuming one wants to track the SP500 at very low cost)

Best bank to stay with long term? (specific criteria)

I take the point around going for the best deal available currently - especially if fixing for a longer period. At the same time, a lot of posters on this forum advise against going to PTSB if there is a risk of "getting stuck with them" for a longer period of time, due to the difference in...

Best bank to stay with long term? (specific criteria)

I might be in a situation where I couldn't easily switch mortgage providers easily in the future - so was wondering - if I were to do one last switch now, what bank should I go to? LTV under 60% and might decide to move out in a few years and rent it out. The criteria that I have in mind: How...

    Interest rates & inflation

Given lower competition in the market (Ulster exiting) - do you expect there's going to be enough competition to drive down the margins on the mortgage products? What would be the first sign that would indicate higher inflation/rates going up in the future? I.e.: will people be able to fix long...
