False accussation of videoing a neighbour

If you have an android phone (it might work for iPhone I dont know), dial *#*#4636#*#* to access system logs, organise by app view, and see "last used" for camera. If you didn't use it at the time, and havent used it since, that will be your proof as it will show date and time of last use. Take...

Gas boiler controller: no 'summer' setting

Any controller should have both a timer and thermostat. Keep the thermostat down, but set the timer for a short morning and evening burn, turn off all the rads so youre not wasting water heating them. Otherwise any plumber should be able to change the controller or put in a hive/nest. We have...

    Best Chromebook for Christmas

I havent researched models in a couple years as the one we bought (asus) is still going strong for my wife. However key differentiation for me between any model is 1) RAM (Chrome is a resource hog), 2) Battery (my asus gets 10 hours), and 3) Screen (this was the compromise on my model, but is...

Samsung Galaxy A50 charging very slowly on computer.

No, its about how much power can be delivered by the port. You can by dedicated chargers with 20w, 30w, 40w charging power etc. A laptop port will always be inferior to a standalone charger. If you do go looking for a dedicated charger, make sure somewhere on the box it says "fast charging"

Struggling , juggling kids and work.

I think the business case for clearing the mortgage has increased, even ignoring recent interest rate rises, we are going into an uncertain economic decade of unwinding an extraordinary period in money policy. Who knows what "value" your 210k cash will have in real terms in 5 years. Having a...

Is energy credit the best option?

It is very much not the best option. The government will never do anything that requires a bit of data analysis or risk Johnny not getting something his neighbour Tommy is. At minimum it should have been a graded offset based on income (Re consumers only, Businesses need a different approach)...

PV Solar quote /5500kw annual consumption

A vote for mysolar, no connection. Agree your quote seems high, BUT, I dont know if the market has taken the opportunity to up prices due to COVID inflation

What info can we get from a smart meter

Personally I have a smart meter but will be staying away from smart tariffs as long as possible - the industry showed their hand in the last week by suggesting those on smart tariffs would have penalties for electricity use during peak times!! So i.e., "incentives" to change electricity use /...

Is building more homes the only answer?

Nothing! In fact I know several people who tried to do that but couldnt find any suitable properties - only one achieved it, by moving quite far away. Other questions; - Why can't we build houses with basements that could be convertible to room space - Why can't we mandate that all apartment...

Guide price for the following list of items for solar panels

My MySolar 3KW PV set with all the bits that made it work + the My Eddi hot water total cost pre grant was €6400, or €2,130 per KW. Yours is coming in at €2,150, so seems decent to me

How are you preparing for gas shortages in the coming months?

By default all solar panels switch off if there's a blackout - can't have uncontrolled electricity seeping back into the lines when workmen are out fixing transponders and fallen poles. If you want solar to cover you in blackout, massive investment in batteries and different system to not shut off

Guide price for the following list of items for solar panels

People on boards.ie say guide price should be about €1k per 1kwh after grant. Cant remember what their rule of thumb for eddi and batteries was. Personally I think you should all look at mysolar.ie and not pay anything up front, went with them and v happy so far.

Struggling , juggling kids and work.

Lots of good views and academic ways to look at spending v saving here. I'd propose one other way, probably simplistically but sometimes if feel that approach works better month to month in the real world. I see a couple of issues in the OP's commentary; - There appears to be a cashflow issue...

    Revolut Loans

That is regulated capability which was enabled by PSD2 regulations. They were brought in, among other things, to enable 3rd party service providers link to traditional bank accounts to make payments or share transaction / statement information. We'll see more and more "apps" that utilise PSD2...

Key Post Is there any downside to fixing your rate for a longish term at present?

This is in line with my thinking and we're 70% the way through changing to a 15 year fix with FI. If rates go up, we're safe, if rates go down enough to warrant it, we should be able to re-fix If we move and rates have gone up, we've protected the "original portion" of the mortgage while adding...

Installing a stove - looking for recommendations

Take that study with a pinch of salt - classic opportunity for academics choosing to frame data points that support their position or thesis. A 300% increase from 1 is only 2 more, but sounds much scarier. Most houses have very low PM2.5 baselines (almost zero), so yes when you open the door of...

Avant Money launches a new mortgage today from < 2%

I've used Vision Financial in Ranelagh for my 3 x mortgage moves and found very good. No association, found them through a friend, but I'll be going back to them to sort out a move to Finance Ireland for me shortly

Just for anyone who stumbles upon this thread, I found this on their site: CAN I GET A GRANT FOR THE SOLAR AND CAR CHARGER INSTALLATION? MySolar will assist you with your application for the grant for solar and car charger installations. Any savings will then be incorporated into our contract...

Multiple Switch Experience - 12/24 months on

Would you look at Avant, or Finance Ireland? I've had a similar switch journey as you but without KBC. Going to look at FI for a longer term fix now I think

    Activ8 solar panels

Thanks, I might have misinterpreted their website - I read that as "if you get the grant, you qualify for this cashback, which is the equivalent saving of 20 a month, but we'll still charge 40 a month". Are you saying you're only being charged 20 a month? That makes it much more appealing - I...
