New ESB Meters being installed by KN Group.

Prior to the new smart meter installation, I submitted a reading. Airtricity then did an ACTUAL reading which was no different to what I had submitted as the house is unoccupied and the power had been turned off at the mains. Then ESB installed their meter. I assumed that the meter would be set...

New ESB Meters being installed by KN Group.

My old meter was changed to one of these "smart meters" Ater ESB had installed it, my bill was over 50x the normal amount. I'm now locked into a dispute with Airtricity over the outrageous bill. €2300 for 3 months for an unoccupied property for which I was paying only a connection fee and...

VAT and duty on goods imported from the UK?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to be posting this: I am thinking of ordering several pieces of garden equipment from Newry. Would anyone know if I will be liable for customs and VAT on delivery? Items already have UK VAT. It's not clear to me if Britain is still technically in the EU...

What Solicitor Should Charge For Uncomplicated Probate

The difficult part of the Probate is gathering all the information/documents. Once you have these, and there are no creditors, you can apply for the Probate yourself. Revenue.ie have plenty of info on their website on how to do it yourself. Download the form, see what's required and give it a...

    Pre-planning consultation

I have a single storey 2 bedroom cottage and thinking of adding two dormer bedrooms. Do I need an architect to draw up a plan prior to a pre-planning consultation or can a County Council Planner tell me if my application has a chance of getting approval prior to submitting a formal application?

Key Post Simple steps YOU should take to avoid being scammed.

Here's another - check your bank statements regularly to ensure Direct Debit mandates have not been set up on your account without your authorization. I had 4 unauthorised withdrawals for payments to Vodafone for a service I don't have. VF informed me I set up the DD. I know I didn't. VF won't...

Going from oil to gas ..... maybe

Thanks all for your contributions. I have scrapped the idea of gas; my house is somewhat removed from the road and it it will cost several thousand to bring the gas pipe to the house. I've decided to stay with oil and upgrade the existing boiler since the cost of building an outhouse, moving...

how to check if the delivery man give me the right amount of kerosene oil?

Only way to know how much oil was delivered is to install a device on your tank. This will monitor how much oil you have in the tank before and after delivery. these devices are not cheap but you would know for sure.

Going from oil to gas ..... maybe

Thanks Fraggle and Shane. I will bear your suggestions in mind when building the outhouse. My concern is the pipes. Some will be exposed and I'm not if one can insulate them adequately for freezing temperatures! Any suggestions?

How much would you pay for insulation?

lowCO2design - I'm not sure I understand your question about specs. I wanted a "warm" as opposed to a "cold flat roof, i.e. insulation above joists and not in-between joists, insulation boards (Kingspan) and not rockwool for a surface area of 54 sqmt. I am just puzzled by the differences in the...

Going from oil to gas ..... maybe

Thank you to all for posting and for your contribution. Fraggle if you're still lurking ...... would you mind telling me more about your boiler house? My oil burner is in the sun room, enclosed in a kind of press under a counter. It's very loud when its running and I am thinking of moving it...

How much would you pay for insulation?

I have been quoted €10,000 incl. VAT to insulate 54 sq.mts of a flat roof with Rockwool! Supplier proposes to strip the old felt and chipboard, install new joists, install 150mm rock wool, sheet the joists with 18mm water proof plywood, put an underlay and finish with a felt top. He will also...

Steel baths better for retaining heat

I have a heavy metal bath and I feel the room/floor temperature dictates how quickly your bath retains or loses heat. My feeling is plastic baths are less prone to this. Personally, I prefer metal baths for both the look and durability. Mine is very old and I had it resurfaced by Renu-bath some...

    fibreglass flat roofs

I came across a company who install fibreglass flat roofs. Aside from them looking good, they also appear to weather well. Would like to hear from anyone who has had this roof installed and what they think of it?

Home Subsidence rectified but not the cracks!

Peteb - thanks for your comments. Perhaps I didn't explain myself clearly. Had I not had an oil spill and progressed with my claim for subsidence, the engineers report would have had sufficent evidence to support my claim for subsidence and all ancillary damages had it not been remedied by a...

    flat roof insulation

I live in Co Meath. I am renovating an old cottage which has a 17x26 ft (approx 7.9 x 5.18 meters?) flat roof with little if any existing insulation. I am thinking of replacing the roof externally with a warmer roof. I don't want to do it from the inside due to the disruption it will cause and...

Home Subsidence rectified but not the cracks!

I filed a claim for subsidence in 2010. Insurance company said I would not be covered as the cause was due to inadequate drainage and poor workmanship, i.e. my fault. Due to the foot dragging on both sides, i.e. my loss assessor and the insurance company and also waiting for the structural...

    Home subsidence+crack and insurance cover

kkelliher - my thoughts exactly and I knew someone would point this out! My claim is a little more complex; I was trying to avoid a long post! Anyway to cut a long story short, because of an oil spill which happened at the beginning of this year close to where the subsidence has/is happening and...
